J. Larry Rutherford, President and CEO of SouthStar Development Partners, Inc. founded the company in 1999 to provide real estate development services for its own account, for investors and owners. SouthStar, based in Coral Gables, Florida, specializes in the acquisition, planning, permitting, development and financing of mixed-use and residential projects.

Current SouthStar projects in Florida include 3,300 acres in St Johns County–Aberdeen, Bartram Springs and Durbin Crossing. Lakeside in Kissimmee, MetroWest in Orlando, Lakeview and Harbour Isles in Hillsborough County. The Trails of West Frisco, a golf course community is being completed by SouthStar in North Dallas, Texas. In addition, Country Club Ridge, a new Dallas community, has begun operations.

The company has numerous projects and properties under ownership, management and/or contract.

Prior to forming SouthStar, Mr. Rutherford was President, Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of the Board of Atlantic Gulf Communities, a publicly-held community deveoloper with 14 projects in Florida, North Carolina and Texas. He joined the company in 1990.

Before 1990, Mr. Rutherford was with Gulfstream Land and Development Corporation, a multi-market land development and homebuilding company, In the nine years he was with Gulfstream he progressed from Senior vice President to President and Chief Operating Officer and ultimately to CEO. From 1976 to 1982 Mr. Rutherford organized Wintergreen Development, Inc., which was affiliated with Bankers Trust Company of New York. Before joining Wintergreen, has was with Cabot, Cabot and Forbes Company where he was respossible for debt and equity financing for major office projects.

Mr. Rutherford holds an M.B.A. from the University of Virginia and a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute.

 

Kimball D. Woodbury is a partner and Managing Director with SouthStar Development Partners.

Prior to joining SouthStar, Mr. Woodbury was with Atlantic Gulf Communities and General Development Corporation for over 18 years. During that period his responsibilities ranged from acquisitions and business development to land and housing operations to planning and permitting. Project sizes ranged from 10-acre commercial developments to 70,000 acre new towns while the geographic areas included the southeast U.S., Texas, China (Nanjing), Clark Air Base in the Phillipines, Argentina (Buenos Aires), Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, and the Bahama Islands.

Mr. Woodbury is involved with the Association of Florida Community Developers (AFCD) and is the former Chairman of AFCD. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute and the Florida Chamber of Commerce and often speaks at seminars and conferences of these organizations. He has also been a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and has held positions in local and regional planning agencies.

Mr. Woodbury attended the University of Florida where he received a B.A. in Philosophy and a M.A. in Urban Geography. He is a graduate of the Leadership Miami Program.

 

Tom Gillette, Regional Manager

J. Thomas Gillette, III is the Regional Manager for north Florida for SouthStar Development Partners. Mr. Gillette's office is located in Jacksonville, Florida. In his capacity of Regional manager, he oversees all aspects of land development, operations and administration for SouthStar's north Florida and Tampa projects.

From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Gillette served as President of Atlantic Builders of Jacksonville, where he oversaw the construction of over 400 homes annually in a four county market. From 1991 to 2000, Mr. Gillette was a Senior Vice President for Atlantic Gulf Communities Corp., with overall responsibility for the operations and development of large-scale planned communities in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa, Florida.

Prior to this, Mr. Gillette served as Vice President and General Manager of Westinghouse Treasure Coast Communities; was the North Florida Division president for Gulfstream Land and Development Corp and owned and operated a home building and real estate brokerage firm in Richmond, Virginia.  

Mr. Gillette holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute.
